LIFE LESSON FOR TODAY, 12/5/13

LUKE 1: 27-28

… a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin’s name
was Mary. 28 And having come in, the angel said
to her, “Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is
with you; blessed are you among women!”

LUKE 1:30

When the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid,
Mary, for you have found favor with God.

LUKE 1:31-35

30 Then the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid,
Mary, for you have found favor with God.
31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb
and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name
Jesus.
32 He will be great, and will be called the Son
of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him
the throne of His father David.
33 And He will reign over the house of Jacob
forever, and of His kingdom there will be no
end.”

34 Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this
be, since I do not know a man?”

35 And the angel answered and said to her,
The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the
power of the Highest will overshadow you;
therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be
born will be called the Son of God.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT

The Bible doesn’t tell a lot about the life of Mary.
The Bible book of Luke tells us that she was a
virgin engaged to Joseph.  She was also chosen
by God to be the mother of Jesus. I’m not a Bible scholar, but any Bible reader can see that Mary
must have been a very special woman. She
believed in God and did as the angel instructed
to do. I can see God’s supernatural plan unfolding.

She is engaged to a man that is a member of
David’s Family Tree. There is royalty and favor
in the House of David. The Bible book of 1 Samuel
13 tells us that, “ David is a man “after God’s own heart”.  David was not sinless but he loved God
with all of his heart. He is the author of the Bible
book of Psalms and his love of God is very evident
in the scriptures he wrote. The Lord knew Joseph’s character.  Matthew 1 said that “he was a just man” and hid Mary from the public.  There were strict
moral codes in Bible days.  Joseph didn’t disown
Mary after she became pregnant. He knew he
wasn’t the father of this baby. He believed in
God and followed all of the angel’s instructions.
He believed that the Holy Spirit impregnated his
wife!!! He was not even supposed to “know” his
wife until after Jesus was born!!

LIFE LESSON FOR TODAY

Imagine being chosen to be the mother of Jesus!
There was honor and tremendous pressure on
Mary and Joseph.  They were the parents of a
child who's birth would change the world! I
was inspiredby the faith they had during this
glorious event.
