LIFE LESSON FOR TODAY, 12/9/13

LUKE 1:39

 Now Mary arose in those days and went

into the hill country with haste, to a city

of Judah  and entered the house of 

Zacharias and greeted Elizabeth.

LUKE 1:42-45

⁴² Then she spoke out with a loud voice and

said, “Blessed are you among women, and 

blessed is the fruit of your womb!"⁴³ But why

is this granted to me, that the motherof my

Lord should come to me? ⁴⁴ For indeed, as 

soon as the voice of your greeting sounded 

in my ears, the babe leaped in my womb for

joy. ⁴⁵ Blessed is she who believed, for there 

will be a fulfillment of those things which were

told her from the Lord.

 HISTORICAL CONTEXT

Mary went to visit her cousin Elizabeth. The
hill country where Elizabeth and Zechariah
lived is called Ain Karem (also spelled Ein
Karem).  This village is important for many

reasons. This is the location where the birth of

Jesus was prophesised by Elizabeth. Elizabeth

and Zechariah, the parents of John the Baptist

lived there.  It is mentioned in one of the Dead

Sea Scrolls. This village is located in the district

of Jerusalem. There is a spring located there 

that provides water to the village.  The spring

is called “Mary’s Spring” because Bible history

records it's location in the village where Mary

and Elizabeth met. This village is also visited

by tourists who come to the Holy Land.
