LIFE LESSON FOR TODAY, 12/20/13

MATTHEW 2:1-2

Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, wise men from the East came to Jerusalem,
saying, “Where is He who has been born King
of the Jews? For we have seen His star in the East
and have come to worship Him.”

MATTHEW 2:7

Then Herod, when he had secretly called the
wise men, determined from them what time
the star appeared.

MATTHEW 2: 9-10

When they heard the king, they departed;
and behold, the star which they had seen
in the East went before them, till it came
and stood over where the young Child
was.
10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced
with exceedingly great joy.

HISTORICAL CONTEXT

The star that the wise men saw in the east was a significant event. They followed this star and it led them to baby Jesus.  The star led the wise men to Bethlehem. It is a neighboring city south of Jerusalem. This star in the East is also called the Star of Bethlehem or the Christmas star.

PAINTING OF THE STAR IN THE EAST,
 CITY BETHLEHEM

A priest named Phillips Brooks wrote a Christmas carol about the city of Bethlehem. Of course, the star is mentioned in the lyrics.  An organist named Lewis Redner added music in 1868.  A lot of popular artist have sung , Oh little of Bethlehem. This song can be heard on the radio and television several time throughout the Christmas Holiday.

LIFE LESSON FOR TODAY

Bible scholars debate whether Jesus was an infant or literally a youngster at the time of the wise men's visit in Bethlehem.  This is a mute argument to me.  The point is, Jesus was born.  I am only concerned with celebrating His birth! I did see a  shooting star
while I was sitting outside on my porch one night
It made me think of the star the wise men saw
when Jesus was born.
