THE LIBERATION OF ST. PETER
This week I'll continue to study the roles that God assigned angels in the Bible. There are numerous scriptures that show angels assisting God's people
in all types of circumstances.
This study is not meant to be a complete study
of angels. My knowledge of angels was limited
and I wanted to learn more about them. I am
sharing scriptures that gave me insight to the
role of the angels during Bible days.
I read two scriptures which showed that angels
were sent to rescue the disciples from jail.What
a blessed event this was.
LIFE LESSON:
ANGEL SENT TO RESCUE APOSTLES (DISCIPLES)
FROM JAIL. TELLS THEM TO PREACH IN THE TEMPLE
ACTS 5:17-20, 22-23,25, 33-34, 38-40
17 Then the high priest rose up, and all those who were with him (which is the sect of the Sadducees), and they were filled with indignation,
18 and laid their hands on the apostles and put them
in the common prison.
19 But at night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out, and said,
20 “Go, stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this life.”
22 But when the officers came and did not find them in the prison, they returned and reported,
23 saying, “Indeed we found the prison shut securely, and the guards standing outside before the doors;but when we opened them, we found no one inside!”
25 So one came and told them, saying, “Look,
the men whom you put in prison are standing
in the temple and teaching the people!”
33 When they heard this, they were furious and plotted to kill them.
34 Then one in the council stood up, a
Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of
the law held in respect by all the people,
and commanded them to put the apostles
outside for a little while.
38 And now I say to you, keep away from these men and let them alone; for if this plan or this work is of men, it will come to nothing;
39 but if it is of God, you cannot overthrow it
lest you even be found to fight against God.”
40 And they agreed with him, and when they
had called for the apostles and beaten them,
they commanded that they should not speak
in the name of Jesus, and let them go.
LIFE LESSON:
AN ANGEL RESCUED PETER FROM JAIL AND
THE HANDS OF KING HEROD.
ACTS 12: 5-9, 11
5 Peter was therefore kept in prison, but constant prayer was offered to God for him by the church.
6 And when Herod was about to bring him out,
that night Peter was sleeping, bound with two
chains between two soldiers; and the guards
before the door were keeping the prison.
7 Now behold, an angel of the Lord stood by
him, and a light shone in the prison; and he
struck Peter on the side and raised him up,
saying, “Arise quickly!”And his chains fell off
his hands.
8 Then the angel said to him, “Gird yourself and
tie on your sandals”; and so he did. And he said
to him, “Put on your garment and follow me.”
9 So he went out and followed him, and did not
know that what was done by the angel was real,
but thought he was seeing a vision.
11 And when Peter had come to himself, he said,
“Now I know for certain that the Lord has sent
His angel, and has delivered me from the hand
of Herod and from all the expectation of the
Jewish people.”
