ARE YOU HIGH & MIGHTY?!
When I was in high school we called
certain girls Miss Uppity and Miss High
& Mighty. They acted like they were better
looking and had more class than the rest
of their class members.
The class system can be tricky. People
have different standards for what
determines if someone is " high
class." It varies by what country you
were born in, what neighborhood you
lived in, how much money you had,
and what ethnic group you belonged to.
Reading the Bible verses about the
history of Jesus' birth should put people
who think they are "high & mighty" to
shame. Jesus could have been born in
the most beautiful palace in the world.
His parents could have been rich and
traveled by caravan with servants to
attend to their every need. The donkey
was their traveling companion.
His parents could have stayed in a
comfortable inn. Yet, Jesus was delivered
in a barn with animals. His baby bed was
an animal feeding trough instead of a nice
bed. Shepherds were approached by
angels and given the Good News about
Jesus' birth. This is amazing because
shepherds were often considered low
class. The Angel of the Lord could have
approached people of a more noble
profession. All of these events
happened according to God's plan.
The following scriptures demonstrate
what the phrase " humble beginnings"
really mean:
LUKE 2: 7-14
7 And she brought forth her firstborn son,
and wrapped him in swaddling clothes,
and laid him in a manger; because there
was no room for them in the inn.
8 And there were in the same country
shepherds abiding in the field, keeping
watch over their flock by night.
9 And, lo, the angel of the Lord came
upon them, and the glory of the Lord
shone round about them: and they were
sore afraid.
10 And the angel said unto them, Fear
not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings
of great joy, which shall be to all people.
11 For unto you is born this day in the city
of David a Saviour, which is Christ the
Lord.
12 And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye
shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling
clothes, lying in a manger.
13 And suddenly there was with the angel
a multitude of the heavenly host praising
God, and saying,
14 Glory to God in the highest, and on
earth peace, good will toward men.
In 2018 I want to be more humble. I want
to always remember to give thanks to God
for all of my blessings whether they are
large or small.
