WHAT ABOUT THOSE HYPOCRITES? #2
The dictionary defines a hypocrite as a person who pretends to have a belief in something but acts contrary to this belief.
Yesterday I discussed my Bible study results about hypocrites. It revealed that Jesus called some people, “hypocrites!”.
Today I’m sharing additional scriptures about the traits of the hypocrite.
My goal is to remember some of these
traits so that I will not fit the description
of a hypocrite!
LIFE LESSON:
OTHER TRAITS OF THE HYPOCRITE
Matthew 6:1-2, 5
1 “Take heed that you do not do your charitable deeds before men, to be seen by them. Otherwise you have no reward from your Father in heaven.
2 Therefore, when you do a charitable deed, do not sound a
trumpet before you as the
hypocrites do in the synagogues
in the streets, that they may have glory
from men. Assuredly,
I say to you, they have their reward.
5 “And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to
you, they have their reward.
Matthew 6:16
“Moreover, when you fast,
do not be like the hypocrites, with a sad countenance.
For they disfigure their faces that they may
appear to men to be fasting. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.
MATTHEW 15:7-8
7 Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying:
8 ‘These people draw near to Me with their mouth,
And honor Me with their lips,
But their heart is far from Me.
Matthew 16:2-4
2 He answered and said to them, “When it is evening you say,
‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red’;
3 and in the morning,
‘It will be foul weather
today, for the sky is red and threatening.
’ Hypocrites!
You know how to discern
the face of the sky, but you cannot discern
the signs of the times.
4 A wicked and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no
sign
shall be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah.” And
He left
them and departed.
Matthew 22:16-21
16 And they sent to Him their disciples with the Herodians,
saying,
“Teacher, we know that You are true, and teach the way of God in
truth; nor do You care about anyone, for You do not regard the
person of men.
17 Tell us, therefore, what do You think? Is it lawful to pay
taxes to Caesar, or not?”
18 But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, “Why do you
test Me, you hypocrites?
19 Show Me the tax money.”
So they brought Him a denarius.
20 And He said to them, “Whose image and inscription is this?”
21 They said to Him, “Caesar’s.”And He said to them, “Render
therefore to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God
the things that are God’s.”
MATTHEW 23:15
“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel
land and sea to win one proselyte, and when he is won, you make
him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves.
MATTHEW 23:23-25, 27
23 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you pay
tithe of mint and anise and cumin, and have neglected the
weightier matters of the law: justice and mercy and faith. These you ought
to have done, without leaving the others undone.
24 Blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!
25 “Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cleanse the outside of the cup and dish, but inside they are
full of extortion and self-indulgence.
27“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are
like
whitewashed tombs which indeed appear beautiful outwardly, but
inside are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness.
JOHN 13:21-22, 26-27
21 When Jesus had said these things, He
was troubled in spirit, and testified and said,
“Most assuredly, I say to you, one
of you will betray Me.”
22 Then the disciples looked at one another,
perplexed about whom He spoke.
26 Jesus answered, “It is he to whom I shall give
a piece of
bread when I have dipped it.” And having
dipped the
bread, He gave it to Judas Iscariot, the
son of
Simon.
27 Now after the piece of bread, Satan entered
him.
Then Jesus said to him, “What you do, do quickly.”
