GENESIS
16:3-4, 10-12, 15-16
3 Then Sarai, Abram’s wife, took Hagar
her maid, the Egyptian, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife, after
Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan.
4 So
he went in to Hagar, and she conceived.
10 Then the Angel of the Lord said to her (Hagar), “I will
multiply your descendants exceedingly, so that they shall not be counted for
multitude.”
11 And the Angel of the Lord said to her:“Behold, you are
with child, And you shall bear a son.
You shall call his name Ishmael, Because the Lord has heard your affliction.
12 He shall be a wild man; His hand shall be against every man, And every man’s hand against him.
And he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.”
You shall call his name Ishmael, Because the Lord has heard your affliction.
12 He shall be a wild man; His hand shall be against every man, And every man’s hand against him.
And he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.”
15 So Hagar bore Abram a son;
and Abram named his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael.
16 Abram was eighty-six
years old when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.
GENESIS
17: 20-21, 25-26
20 And as for Ishmael, I have heard you.
Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him
exceedingly. He shall beget twelve princes, and I will make him a great nation.
21 But My covenant I will establish with
Isaac, whom Sarah shall bear to you at this set time next year.”
25 And Ishmael his son was
thirteen years old when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.
26 That very same day Abraham was circumcised, and his son Ishmael;
26 That very same day Abraham was circumcised, and his son Ishmael;
GENESIS 21: 14, 20-21
14 So Abraham rose early in the morning,
and took bread and a skin of water; and putting it on her shoulder, he
gave it and the boy to Hagar, and sent her away. Then she departed and
wandered in the Wilderness of Beersheba.
20 So God was with the lad; and he grew
and dwelt in the wilderness, and became an archer.
21 He dwelt in the Wilderness of Paran;
and his mother took a wife for him from the land of Egypt.

GENESIS 25:10-12
10 Then the Angel of the Lord
said to her, “I will multiply your descendants exceedingly, so that they shall
not be counted for multitude.”
11 And the Angel of the Lord
said to her:“Behold, you are with child And you shall bear a son. You shall call his name Ishmael, Because the Lord
has heard your affliction.
GENESIS 25: 12-18
12 Now this is the genealogy of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah’s maidservant, bore to Abraham.13 And these were the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, according to their generations: The firstborn of Ishmael, Nebajoth; then Kedar, Adbeel, Mibsam, 14 Mishma, Dumah, Massa,
15 Hadar,[a] Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah.
16 These were the sons of Ishmael and these were their names, by their towns and their settlements, twelve princes according to their nations.
17 These were the years of the life of Ishmael: one hundred and thirty-seven years; and he breathed his last and died, and was gathered to his people.
18 (They dwelt from Havilah as far as Shur, which is east of Egypt as you go toward Assyria.) He died in the presence of all his brethren.
HISTORICAL
CONTEXT:
The
Lord had a covenant with Abraham.
He told him that he would multiply his
generation. The
generation was supposed
to start with the son Abraham had with his
wife Sarah. Sarah was barren
for many years
and didn’t wait for the covenant to be fulfilled.
had their son covenant child, Isaac.
Abraham
sent Hagar and his son Ishmael away
from his home. They lived in Beersheba, Israel
and eventually settled in Paran, Egypt.
The Lord blessed
Hagar and Ishmael.
He was proficient in
archery. He married an Egyptian woman and had
twelve
sons and one daughter. His sons became
tribal chiefs. The Bible book of Genesis
17 and 21
shows that Abraham still had contact with Ishmael. He circumcised Ishmael
when was age 13. Ishmael
and his brother Isaac
buried Abraham in a cave.
Ishmael lived to age 137. Ishmael is mentioned
in
the Quran and in Muslim literature.
LIFE

THE LIFE OF ISHMAEL
My
Bible Study of the life of Ishmael showed me
that the Blended Family is not a new
concept. It
has existed since Biblical
times. The scriptures
show that Abraham and Hagar followed the
Lord’s instructions whenever trouble happened in their
families. I should take
heed to the blessings these two people received because they had faith in the
Lord and
His
Word.
