LIFE LESSON FOR TODAY, 8/4/14

DEPICTION OF SHOFAR BY ALPHONSE LEVY

I have been going to the church I attend now
for three years. It is a small church and it has
a congregation with mixed races of people. The
first  thing I noticed on the first Sunday I went
there was, a Star of David flag  on the pastor's podium.A man blew the ram's horn at the start
of the service.  I was confused until an elder of
the church explained these artifacts.

He said that we are a non-denominational church
who loves Israel. This church send financial support
to Jewish organizations. The ram's horn was called
a shofar and blowing it is powerful.  It is used to fill the atmosphere of  the church with God's spirit. The Aaronic Blessing was given at the end of the church service and the shofar was blown again.

I was intrigued and went home to study the shofar.
The shofars we used at the church come from large antelopes in East Africa in Yemen. Most of the shofars
come from domestic rams. The shofar is available in various sizes. The pitch of the shofar is controlled by
the player.

Here are examples of shofars:

LISTEN TO THE SHOFAR:

This is musical instrument is mentioned in the Bible.
It has been used by Jews since Bible days. It is used by Jews in the synagogue and for religious holidays and ceremonies.

This week I am sharing scriptures in the Bible that reference the shofar:

GENESIS: 22-13-14

13 Then Abraham lifted his eyes and looked, and there behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by its horns. So Abraham went and took the ram, and offered it up for a burnt offering instead of his son.
14 And Abraham called the name of the place, The-Lord-Will-Provide;   as it is said to this day, “In the Mount of the Lord it shall be provided.”

EXODUS 19:16

Then it came to pass on the third day, in the morning, that there were thunderings and lightnings, and a thick cloud on the mountain; and the sound of the trumpet was very loud, so that all the people who were in the camp trembled.

LEVITICUS  23:24

“Speak to the children of Israel, saying: ‘In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall have a sabbath-rest, a memorial of blowing of trumpets, a holy convocation.

LEVITICUS  25:9
Then you shall cause the trumpet of the Jubilee to sound on the tenth day of the seventh month; on the Day of Atonement you shall make the trumpet to sound throughout all your land.

 NUMBERS 29:1

And in the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall have a holy convocation. You shall do no customary work. For you it is a day of blowing the trumpets.
